MORE INFO
Plant-derived squalane is obtained from the oil residues of various plants, including olive, amaranth, sugarcane, sugar beet, palm, rice, and wheat. Since olive cultivation has a lower environmental impact than other sources, it is often the preferred option.
Squalene, a natural component of olive oil, undergoes a hydrogenation process—without the use of solvents—to transform into squalane. Interestingly, squalane is also a natural part of human sebum!
Fun fact: In the 1980s, olive-derived squalane began replacing animal-based squalane in cosmetics—a great step forward!
INCI
Olea europaea (olive) squalane
HOW TO USE
This cosmetic active is oil-based and can be applied like a plant oil in facial care, eye treatments, body care, and hair treatments—either pure or diluted.
A patch test is always recommended before use.
For an effortless way to enjoy its benefits, simply add it to:
- Facial, hair, and body serums
- Face and body butters
- Pre-made (already emulsified) facial moisturizers or eye creams—use sparingly! Too much squalane can disrupt the delicate balance of an emulsion.
